Taklin eye drops constitute potassium iodide, sodium chloride and calcium chloride. Altogether effect of this drug is to slow down the process of cataract formation after the inter-ocular lens transfer. It also provides the proper dilation and nutrition required for the lens along with vision improvement. Taklin is administered in the case of delay in the cataract removal surgery. Visual improvement in early cataract and prevents posterior capsular opacification. Individual role of the constituents are explained below-
POTASSIUM IODIDE- Stimulate the tissues of the eye ball by increasing the metabolism rate. As the metabolism rate increases, so does the rate of clearing up unwanted materials out of the eye through these tissues that surrounds the vitreous humor. There is a time-dependent protective influence of potassium iodide against selenite cataract development. It is supposed that the anti-cataract effect of potassium iodide could be based on direct or indirect antioxidant mechanisms.
SODIUM CHLORIDE- It is the major extracellular cation. It is important in electrolyte and fluid balance, osmotic pressure control and water distribution as it restores sodium ions. It is used as a source of electrolytes and water for hydration. When applied topically in ophthalmology has anti-edema effect. It also works as a solvent for various drugs.
CALCIUM CHLORIDE- It works both ways, as a catalyst to enhance the work ability of potassium iodide and as an irrigating solution for proper perfusion of the eye with the drug.
